From April 19th to 22nd, at the seminar on captive population management of China Sichuan Golden Monkey held in Shennongjia, the goal of combining in-situ conservation with ex situ conservation was put forward for the first time. More than 20 zoo experts from all over the country gathered in Shennongjia to "blind date" the captive Sichuan golden monkey. Among them, representatives from Harbin, Shanghai and other zoos held consultations on population matching and reached cooperation intentions.

At present, there are 427 captive golden monkeys in China, including 214 males and 212 females, which are kept in 43 zoos and other units. By 2015, the number of captive golden monkeys was 378, accounting for nearly 90% of the total, equivalent to 7.7 times that of individuals captured in the wild before 2000.

The captive population of golden monkey has become a sustainable population, which plays an active role in wildlife protection and social education, but the population reproduction also faces many practical problems such as technical problems and the decline of existing individual breeding ability.

"It is a big challenge to improve the breeding quality and quantity of captive golden monkey population more scientifically and effectively." Xie Zhong, vice president of China Zoo Association, said that at present, there are fewer and fewer individuals who have been rescued in the wild. How to make full use of the existing golden monkey germplasm and gene resources in all breeding zoos by scientific breeding, standardized management and optimized pairing to achieve the management plan of Sichuan golden monkey breeding population reaching 600 in 15 years and maintain this level in the next 100 years is a huge project at present.

Yu Zeying, the pedigree keeper of Sichuan Golden Monkey and deputy secretary-general of China Zoo Association, said that according to the current situation of the captive population of Sichuan Golden Monkey, such as the great disparity in unit quantity, large regional differences in feeding conditions and uneven management level and ability, it is necessary to integrate superior resources, fully learn from the advanced field research experience of Sichuan Golden Monkey in Shennongjia and other protected areas, actively strive for technical support from colleges and universities, and jointly do a good job in population management and cooperative breeding.
