There are still the last ten days in 2019, and I am making a training and preparation plan for the Olympic year. There is little time, a lot of work and arduous tasks, but our team has a good mentality.
Clear goals, determine the things to be done, implement them one by one, and work hard one by one. If we accomplish one thing, we will lose one thing. If we achieve a goal, we will take a step forward.
This process is very painful, but it is also very enjoyable.
Team for the eighth year, this is a necessary stage every year, compared with the first two years, now it is much more "happy".
For me, the second time I took over the women’s volleyball team in China at the age of 53 was to be a good paving stone. A career keeps moving forward, and at different stages, many people need to take responsibility.
More than 40 years ago, when China Women’s Volleyball Team just started, my coach Yuan Weimin was the founder of this road. The old women’s volleyball team members, including me, followed Yuan’s guidance and made a series of impossible things possible.
Later, every coach and team member in the development history of China women’s volleyball team used their own efforts to push this cause forward faster or slower.
In 2013, China Women’s Volleyball Team encountered some new difficulties and challenges on its way forward. I am still in the front line. As a member of the old women’s volleyball team, I feel that I have the responsibility to do something for China Women’s Volleyball Team.
I regarded that trip as an exploration. When I made a decision, I didn’t care whether I could succeed or not, and I didn’t worry about what to do if I failed.
China women’s volleyball team has been in the advanced ranks in the world for so many years, and the general direction must be right. However, with the continuous development of science and technology, people’s awareness level is constantly improving, and modern volleyball is also undergoing profound changes. The challenge faced by China women’s volleyball team is how to balance change and unchanged in the new period.
It is the foundation for China women’s volleyball team to be a strong team in the world to insist on rapid change on a comprehensive basis. However, it is impossible to rely on six or seven people to win the world today. Every coach and athlete is faced with breaking through the comfort zone and trying those "won’t", "unwilling", "dare" and "impossible".
In the process of exploration, we have precious wealth left by our predecessors, but we also need to show courage, knowing that the road ahead is full of thorns, which may be scarred and even bloody, and we must keep moving forward and keep moving forward.
On this road, few people can persist in walking down in 1978. Many people get on the bus halfway, and many people leave halfway. If I hadn’t followed this record of our growth, I might have forgotten some details, but I always remember the hopeful eyes of athletes when they joined the team, and the regrets and reluctance of those who said goodbye to us for various reasons.
Along the way, we constantly corrected ourselves, bravely admitted our mistakes, and made decisive changes. Our goal is to keep the China women’s volleyball team energetic and better. As long as every effort we make is in this direction, we will be very practical.
I always remember what Yuan Dao once said, when you are the head coach of China women’s volleyball team, you should be selfless and fearless. Even if it is squeezed to a desperate situation, I hope to use my last strength to fight again. This is the spirit of women’s volleyball, not necessarily winning the championship, but always having a champion’s heart.

In the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok, then head coach Yuan Weimin boldly used Lang Ping, who was only 18 years old, as the main player, which laid the foundation for winning five consecutive championships. Although there was no title of "iron hammer" at that time, the scene of Lang Ping leaping high again and again and hitting the ball at the other side still left an indelible impression on me when I was sitting on the sidelines watching the ball game. After the new millennium, Chen Zhonghe became the head coach of the women’s volleyball team, giving up some old players and bringing in a number of new players such as Feng Kun, hao yang, Zhao Ruirui, Liu Yanan and Zhou Suhong. The trust in them was exchanged for the shocking reversal of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and he reached the top of the Olympic Games again after 20 years.
Of course, the most wonderful example is the history recorded in this book. In 2013, Lang Ping returned to take charge of the national team, and the women’s volleyball team, which is at a low point, urgently needs to make changes. She has to face not only the pressure of grades, but also the alternation of old and new standard questions. More importantly, as a post-60s, how to communicate with these post-90s and gain trust. The personal experience of being promoted when she was young broadened her horizons after going abroad to teach. Lang Ping finally succeeded in establishing an emotional bond between her and the players, and turned it into the combat effectiveness of the women’s volleyball team.
The book Thorns and Glory truly and vividly records the process of Lang Ping’s return to lead the women’s volleyball team back to the top.
