Biden’s Forward-looking Trip to Europe: Showing America’s "Renewed Commitment" to its Allies

China news agency, Washington, June 6-US President Biden published a signed article in Washington post on June 6, looking forward to his first overseas visit agenda. He said that this trip to Europe is to show the "renewed commitment" of the United States to its allies.

According to the schedule released by the White House, Biden will leave for Europe on the 9th Eastern Time, starting his first visit during his term of office. After meeting with British Prime Minister Johnson on the 10th, Biden will attend the G-7 summit in Britain from 11th to 13th, and attend the NATO summit and the US-EU summit in Brussels from 14th to 15th. On the 16th, Biden will travel to Geneva, Switzerland to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At the beginning of the article, Biden said that at this moment of global uncertainty, the world is still struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic. "This visit is to show the renewed commitment of the United States to its allies and partners.".

Biden highlighted the G-7 summit, the NATO summit and the meeting between US and Russian leaders in his article. He said that "the United States must lead the world in a strong position" whether to end the COVID-19 epidemic worldwide or to cope with the growing climate crisis.

Biden pointed out that the leaders of the G-7 countries have not met face to face for two years due to the COVID-19 epidemic. "Ending this virus pandemic, improving public health security in all countries and promoting a strong and inclusive global economic recovery will be our top priority."

For the NATO summit, Biden said that he will reaffirm the firm commitment of the United States to NATO’s common defense and ensure that NATO remains strong in the face of every challenge, including threats such as cyber attacks against the key infrastructure of NATO member States.

When talking about the meeting between the leaders of the United States and Russia, Biden particularly emphasized that the meeting was "conducted after high-level discussions with friends, partners and allies." He said that the United States and Europe will unite to deal with Russia’s challenges to European security, starting with the Ukrainian issue.

Biden said that in his previous call with Putin, his attitude was "clear and direct". The United States does not seek conflict, but wants stable and predictable bilateral relations between the United States and Russia, so as to cooperate with Russia on strategic stability and arms control.

Since the Biden administration came to power, the United States and Russia have made progress in extending the validity of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, but the confrontation on Ukraine, cyber security, human rights, election intervention and other issues has intensified.

In April this year, the US government imposed large-scale sanctions on Russia and expelled 10 Russian diplomats on the grounds of malicious activities such as cyber attacks and interference in US elections. Russia then took a reciprocal response and expelled 10 American diplomats in Russia.

Biden said in an article on the 6th that he had taken a "meaningful response" to the violation of US sovereignty. "President Putin knows that I will not hesitate to respond to harmful activities in the future." He also said that when meeting with Putin, he will once again emphasize the positions of the United States and Europe on related issues.

For Biden’s first foreign visit, the White House said in a statement on the 3rd that the purpose of this visit is to emphasize that the United States is committed to restoring relations with its allies, reviving the transatlantic partnership, and responding to global challenges through close cooperation, so as to better safeguard the interests of the United States.
